Cars & Engine Building
This is a combination of multiple projects that involved the teardown, assessment, and reassembly of various combustion engines. Performing maintenance, rebuilding turbocharged systems, and engines. I gained deep understanding of assembly, fluid dynamics, and the importance mechanical timing.
System Complexity: Rebuild of a Boxer (horizontally opposed) turbocharged engine. Which included reacting to the uniqueness of a split-block design and complex oil passages for the turbocharger.
Measurement: Performed checks, added preventative measures to ensure the engine runs in performance without issues. Including piston-to-wall clearance and ensuring head gasket integrity under high-boost conditions (the reason the engine needed to be rebuilt)
Timing: Managed the very intricate installation of a quad-cam timing belt, and ensured synchronization between crankshaft and camshafts
Skills I Used:
Precision Tools: Using specific torque-to-yield sequences, micrometers, feeler gauges
Failure and Quality Analysis: Ability to read data from spark plugs, walls, and bearing, whilst following meticulous patterns to diagnose root cause of fatigue within the engine and other components
Collaboration: Worked in a two-person team to manage complex heavy tasks for critical peer-review and assembly checks
Final Output: ~400HP | AWD | Big Turbo
